New beginnings (an announcement)

If you’re wondering where I’ve been for the last month, I’ve been working on something very exciting. *Fanfare* *Pauses for dramatic effect*

I’ve launched an Auntie Bulgaria newsletter over on Substack.

What the hell is Substack?

It’s a newsletter platform, basically. But you don’t need to worry about that. You don’t need to create a Substack account or have the Substack app (although if you want to get the app, you’ll find lots of other fab writers who have made Substack their home).

Just follow the link above, enter your email address and hit subscribe. That’s it. I’ll then waft into your inbox every fortnight, like a delicious summer breeze.

This makes it super-easy for you to keep up with my latest posts. Never again will you need to wonder what Claire and Poor Rob are up to. Never again will you have to navigate to this website for your Auntie Bulgaria fix. You’ll hear from me every two weeks, without fail, and you don’t have to do a thing.

What to expect from the newsletter

Auntie Bulgaria is a fortnightly newsletter where I wang on about my three favourite topics: gardening, food, and life in Bulgaria. Expect updates from the veg patch, plant-forward recipes and recipe recommendations, tips for squeezing more plants into your everyday meals, and a taste of our life here in The Bulg. Good wholesome fun for all.

In other words, it’s rather like what you get here already, but in a newsletter format.

Why am I switching to Substack?

A few reasons. Firstly, I’ve wanted to do Auntie Bulgaria as a newsletter for years but never quite managed to get my head around the backend stuff – the software, the list management, the data protection… TOO BORING. Substack takes care of it all for me so I can concentrate on writing. If Substack had been around 10 years ago, I’d have done it then.

Secondly, this blog has changed so much over the years and it feels about time for a fresh start. Auntie Bulgaria began as a blog about starting a new life in Bulgaria – finding a house, renovating it, creating a garden, learning the language and dealing with the bureaucracy. As time has gone on and we’ve settled into life here, I’ve found myself writing about that stuff less and less. Instead, I’ve gravitated towards writing about growing our own food, cooking, and the joy of living life at a slower pace. All the things that we moved here for.

And finally, Substack is the home for food writers. So that’s where I want to be. (Although, as I said, I’ll still be writing about the garden and sharing some of our life here in rural Bulgaria.)

So will this blog disappear?

The full archive will remain here. And a few classic posts will find their way over to Substack, to share with readers new and old. But I won’t be posting any new content here on this site. All new posts will go up on Substack and be sent out directly to subscribers.

Goodbye, and hello!

It’s a tiny bit emotional writing these last few sentences on the original – the OG – Auntie Bulgaria blog. (Turns out I’m not a robot after all. Or if I am, I’ve become very good at simulating human emotion.)

I’ve been writing this blog since 2010, which is the longest I’ve ever stuck at any job or hobby. But it’s not like it’s coming to an end – it’s just morphing into something new. Something I’m very excited about. And something that I think will be much easier for you lovely lot.
